These essays discuss the importance of Taiwan from several perspectives, including that of the United States, China, and Taiwan itself. Although Taiwan is a small island with a relatively small population compared to the major powers of the Asia-Pacific region,  the future of the island -- and more importantly, how that future is determined -- are critical factors in the future of the entire region.
